Musical Dialogues: Paul Juon and Johannes Brahms
For the second concert of this season at St Cuthbert’s Church, join us for an evening of chamber music for clarinet, cello and piano.
In the summer of 1891, Johannes Brahms ended his self-imposed retirement from composing by penning a trio for clarinet, cello and piano in A minor. The process of composing the trio reignited Brahms’ creative fire and marked the beginning of his “late” period; a rich output full of autumnal colours and moods, passionate yet deeply profound. At the same time a young Russian-Swiss composer, Paul Juon, was embarking on a career in music having just graduated from the Moscow Conservatory, where his classmates included Rachmaninoff and Scriabin. It was Rachmaninoff that affectionally nicknamed Juon “the Russian Brahms”.
The Aeolian Trio invite you to this musical dialogue between Brahms’ mature clarinet Trio op 114 and Juon’s lesser known but very attractive early Trio Miniaturen op 18. Programme will also include Beethoven’s uplifting “Gassenhauer” Trio op 11, written in 1797, which no doubt both Brahms and Juon used as a reference when creating their clarinet trios.

Hugo Wolf A selection of Lieder
Franz Schubert “The Trout” piano quintet in A major D. 667
For their Spring Concert Philomel invite you on a whirlwind tour of 19th Century Vienna; an age when the city was often referred to as the “Music Capital of the World”.
Programme will begin with Gustav Mahler’s dark and passionate piano quartet. A rarely performed gem, this is Mahler’s only surviving composition of chamber music. Following on from the Mahler we will present a selection of intimate and dream-like Lieder by Hugo Wolf; the genius master of the miniature form who was able to compress a myriad of emotions and images into concise art songs.
The concert will culminate with a performance of Franz Schubert’s magnificent Piano Quintet - “The Trout”. Created just over 200 years ago in 1819 this is the only piano quintet in the mainstream repertoire that manages to incorporate the entire modern bowed string family (violin, viola, cello and double bass) in a uniquely harmonious and balanced way. An enduring masterwork The Trout never ceases to delight and move its listeners.
Join us and discover more about these pieces through informal and informative verbal introductions that will be given by our performers throughout the evening!

C. Schumann Three Romances
Zimbalist Concert Fantasy on Rimsky-Korsakov Le Coq d’Or
E. Schulhoff Sonata
G. Gershwin Three Preludes
longstanding musical partnership, Anna Kondrashina and Pavel Timofeyevsky have always been interested in both exploring and expanding the flute and piano repertoire. In this concert the duo will present a programme that will feature their original transcriptions of Clara Schumann’s three intimate Romances, Efrem Zimbalist’s virtuosic Golden Cockerel Fantasy based on themes from Rimsky-Korsakov’s Opera as well as George Gershwin’s sparkly preludes. Alongside these transcriptions the musicians will perform Erwin Schulhoff’s rarely-played flute and piano sonata, which they believe to be one of the great masterworks of the 20th century chamber music repertoire. The transcriptions presented at this concert are a part of a set of original arrangements that Kondrashina and Timofeyevsky have created over the last three years, which they intend to publish as well as record for their debut album “Rewired Music”, to be released in the Autumn of 2023.
